Vitamin D, Infections and Chronic Disease

A normal vitamin D level means little.

We think bacteria and viruses are tiny little things we can easily eliminate. Sometimes yes. Other times – far from. They are smart. They have evolved with us and also way faster than us.

Why?

Turns out that these little punks (infections) hijack our ability to USE vitamin D for our immune system.
Because they know that vitamin D kills them.

Next time you go to the doctor, check your 25 OH vitamin D3, don’t think you’re ‘Great! Your levels are above 50’ – no.

That’s not how it works.

I highly recommend you talk with your doctor about checking your 25 OH Vitamin D3 AND 1,25 OH Vitamin D3 levels.

It is the 1,25 OH Vitamin D3 that is the active one.

However, that still isn’t enough because what that active vitamin D3 does is stimulate your vitamin D gene to get to work fighting infections.

Issue?

Some of infections can block your vitamin D gene from working!

If you’ve struggled for a long time, you MUST look for infections.

  • chronic pain
  • chronic fatigue
  • mental dysfunction / mood swings
  • autoimmune conditions
  • chronic stress
You MUST look for infections.

Any type of infection you must look for:
  • Lyme
  • Mold
  • Viral
  • Bacterial
  • STD
  • Parasite

All locations should be evaluated:
  • Nose and Sinus (swab – culture and sensitivity and possible x-ray)
  • Teeth and Gums (swab and possible x-ray)
  • Blood
  • Urine
  • Stool (comprehensive digestive stool analysis)

Bottom Line:

Having a ‘normal’ 25 OH Vitamin D3 level is NOT enough.

Is your 25 OH Vitamin D3 level above normal but feeling abnormal?
Has your doctor checked for chronic infections?

  • What about SNP’s that cause too high 1,25-hydroxy D with low normal D3 numbers. Love to learn more about that.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes this is a big subject that Dr. Lynch hopes to write more about.

I had OATS and stool tests done in 2015 and 2018. I have had low stomach acid for at least 25 years. Diagnosed via the Heidelberg test. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s prior to that and now Sjogrens. I have had hookworm, Klebsiella, SIBO, H Pylori in the past and possibly still have SIBO. Definitely have dysbiosis and high oxalates, extreme sensitivities to foods, fatigue and inflammation. I do believe things are getting better. I am addressing gut health and my diet is healthy. I basically eat protein and vegetables and healthy fats. I do see Dr Gundry in September and would love to find the root cause. Had stomach pumped at age 2 after eating poisonous mushrooms off the lawn. My stomach became worse after hospitalization at age 45 but have struggled with stress all my life. Would love your input @drbenlynch.

Thank you for your question. We are sorry to hear about your health concerns. Regarding Dr. Lynch’s input, note that we (including Dr. Lynch) are not authorized to answer your personal medical questions because we are not your treating healthcare professional. Remember that health is holistic. This means that in order to determine the root cause of your issues, you need to look at multiple avenues of health including lab markers, genetics, current conditions/symptoms, lifestyle, diet, and environmental toxins. To do this, your qualified healthcare professional will need to review your full medical history, order lab testing, and determine a protocol tailored for you. Though Dr. Lynch is a naturopathic doctor (ND), he is not your treating physician, and will not have all the information he needs to give you accurate advice – sometimes, a single issue will have underlying causes that can easily be overlooked via a simple, virtual comment or question. It is the responsibility of your qualified healthcare professional to answer your questions and assign a protocol for you. We understand that not all health professionals are trained in this area of biochemistry and nutrition, and it can be frustrating if you feel they don’t answer your questions or help you solve your problems. Because of this we now offer a Physicians Directory where you can find a health professional that is familiar with StrateGene®, nutrigenomics and some of Dr. Lynch’s work. Remember from Dr. Lynch’s book Dirty Genes, health is a four letter word: work. Part of this ‘work’ is finding a health professional that you feel is listening to you and helps you in the ways that you need. We are here to guide you by providing you resources in hopes that you will take the information and put in the work that optimizes your life. Wishing you the best on your health journey.

    • I am not a doctor either, but are you willing to change your eating habits?
You may have found foods that are healthy for some people, but may not be healthy for you.
The book that changed my life is “Eat Right 4 Your Type” by Peter D’Adamo. It works for a lot of people. This method has also been confirmed by an Italian doctor named Pierro Mozzi. You get to eat as much as you want. Food combining also works for many, many people. For ideas you can use, you might also read the website – healthviafood.org
